i am seeing a lot of posts of retro children's programming. this is probably the most memorable animated video, in my opnion, from either sesame street or the electric company:pinball number count:you can't beat that groove. very eric burdon and war.

  2. nicki says You guys are getting me into a Sesame Street kick... Sad that children's programming is hardly as imaginative.

  3. lemontwist says Oh man, I love love love this. It's like an acid trip, but educational. I love the groovy colors and sounds. They don't make shows like this anymore, which is a shame.

  4. Takeshi Kovacs says I have been singing this to my kids since they were born. I completely forgot where I got it from - thanks for the reminder - total mind trip. Very Yellow Submarineish.

  5. eshep says have you guys seen the they might be giants 'here come the abcs' dvd? if you haven't, and you give a damn about children's programming, or even miss the cool type of film shorts that you used to see on pbs, you should check it out. it's their abc's album with videos for every song, most of which are really great animated type vids, as well as some puppetry, live action, etc. all very, very clever and fun. and kinda retro in that 'this reminds me of sesame street and electric company' kind of way. sometimes i listen to that album when there are no children around. it's that good.

  6. Takeshi Kovacs says I'll have to get it for the kids - especially my pre-schooler. I bought them the School House rocks DVD and they didn't receive it as well as I thought - I guess they don't care where a bill comes from. My folks had a rule - if you said you were too sick to go to school, you had to stay in bed all day and watch PBS - I attribute my master's degree to that rule. ;)

  7. Moof says As much as I love the current PBS kids lineup, I recently bought The Electric Company DVDs and I have to say it blows the contemporary stuff away. I remembered a lot of the episodes from my childhood, but had forgotten how incredible they were. (And yeah, the pinball machine/countdown was one of my absolute favorites when I was a kid.)

  8. eshep says i bought both the electric company box set and the school house rock dvd. the kids love both of them. my oldest is four, so i think some elements of both of them are lost on him, but he still enjoys the songs and the visuals. i think what i love about these, and what i think is missing from most children's programming is that sense of gentleness, of comfort, and being in the hands, for a few minutes at least, of media that gives a shit about kids. so much of it these days is so hyperkinetic and not really about anything that is truly educational. most parents will put their kids in front of nickelodeon or yu gi oh and it's all yelling and screaming and zapping and bouncing off the walls. where's mr. rogers when we need him most?

  9. Takeshi Kovacs says There wasn't a more anticipated island of kid's television to a sick kid than Mr. Rogers. I always came on around 2 or so, and the PBS television before that was nothing but British dramas and classical concert footage - sent a sick kid straight to sleep or his imagination.

  12. ookpik says Yay! I hated this animation as a kid (too ugly, not enough pink and purple. You know. Kids have terrible taste.), but it's awesome now. Some things for kid show fans: - "Yo Gabba Gabba":http://yogabbagabba.com/. The best current kids show going. (Hello, it teaches "beatboxing":http://yogabbagabba.com/biz.html!) - Worried about spazzy, pointless kids tv? Douglas Rushkoff's book ??Playing the Future?? might give you some hope.
