WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Why isn't this Zeppelin's most well known track???????

Posted over 3 years ago
This is really what Zeppelin was all about....blues based english boys, stairway to heaven was so far away from their roots that it almost a mockery that it is their legacy to classic rock....a pity really.......i don't know if i'm making sense at this point, been up all night, but this came up on itunes and i couldn't help blurting this out........because i really hate it when stairway to heaven tops all those ridiculous top 100 rock songs of all time!!!!

  4. fool on da loose says Ennueikiller, I know where you're coming from and tend to feel the same way. One thought for Since I've Been Loving You's lack of popularity/acceptance may be the fact that it is not considered a true Zep "original". It was actually inspired by a song from a band called "Moby Grape" I believe. Several of Zep's blue's based songs were, in fact, covers of songs originally written by little known, gritty blues artists.

  6. ennuikiller says yes, fool on da loose, that's the point though.....just becuase it's derivative doesn't mean it's less meaningful? after all everyone has influences.......most of page's background was steeped in the blues, plant's i believe maybe more like folk-blues. In any case, every zeppelin album, most of their bootleg stuff, and certainly their live perfromances were overwhelmingly blues based.....stairway to heaven was an anomaly, and (for me) a bad one at that!

  7. fool on da loose says Let's turn this lemon into lemonaide, shall we? If Since i've Been Loving You had been more "rock" based, it certainly would have commanded or received, however you'd like to look at it, more radio play and exposure the years. This potentially would have lumped it into a category with songs like Black Dog and Communication Breakdown which, for me, have lost some luster due to overexposure. Since i've Been Loving You's pace and rhythm, likely due to it being blues based, does not lend it a mass appeal type of allure. This is potentially why it has never received the recognition you and I beleive it deserves. This is the beauty of it though. It's still there gently tucked away on side 2 of Zep 3, not to be repeatedly thrust upon us during our local classic rock station's daily "Get the Lead Out" segment. Some folks like to brush away a little dust, while other like to dig further. Guess where the gems usually lie?

  8. fairportfan says This is really what Zeppelin was all about….blues based english boys Oh, i know how hard it can be to get people to see past the labels and the popular anamolies - i like to point out to people that *Hank Williams Sr* was as much a blues man as he was a country artist and they look at me funny.

  9. ennuikiller says very well expressed, but i'll tell ya, no matter how many times i hear black dog, i never grow tired of it!!

  10. ennuikiller says yes, fairportfan, and zeppelin were as much folk & country as they were blues and rock...stereotypes & classifications breakdown quickly with truly great artists!

  11. jason1969 says There are so many Zep tunes that are monumental, yet you will almost never hear it on a radio station that would play "Stairway". I'm thinking of the epics like "Ten Years Gone" "The Rain Song""Achillies Last Stand" and my favorite "In My Time of Dying" And of cource "Since I've Been Loving You". There is great footage of that song on the 2003 DVD. Amazing guitar lead that will make you cry. For the record that 2 DVD set is one of the greatest things Ive ever seen. I now feel like I have closure with a band that I love so much. The complete 1970 concert from Royal Albert Hall truly had me crying. The closest thing I will ever get to seeing them live in thier prime. Also amazing about it is that it only spans a mere 9 years, you can see how the world of music changed with them. It starts in a concert hall and ends in a giant stadium with video screens and delay towers! I also agree, the Black Dog riff will never sound dated!
