TNT

One of the fascinating sidebars of watching the Phil Spector trial is seeing who the anchors on Court TV round up to comment on the proceedings. Sp far, the girl singer from The Teddy Bears and LaLa Brooks from the Crystals have weighed in on their history with Phil (LaLa didn't like how Spector treated his mother), and today Ike Turner showed up. Which is kind of funny, seeing how Spector didn't allow Ike to come to the studio all that much, and seeing how Ike has his own issues with women and violence. As you'd expect, Ike would have never, ever suspected that Spector could do such a thing...It got me thinking about "The TNT Show," a sequel to the far more famous "TAMI Show." Spector was the musical director of the show, and it featured performances by Ray Charles, The Byrds, The Lovin' Spoonful (Spector had tried to sign them), The Ronettes, and other stars of '65. Aside from an excruciating performance by Joan Baez of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the movie is well worth seeing. The headliners were Ike & Tina Turner, and they were great. Not long after, Spector signed them, and attempted to introduce them to a pop audience with "River Deep-Mountain High." That pop breakthrough was delayed a few years, however. Here they are, arguably at their peak:

  1. ivylander says Just. Wow. The energy and tightness simply astound. Is any live act out there today anywhere near this good? And any idea who the male dancer is who comes out at the end? He's almost a match for Tina, and the two of them together is one of the sexiest things I've seen in a very long time. On a less reverential note, another question: Is it possible that Phil got the wig he has been wearing during the trial from David McCallum?
