WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

another bossa nova saturday

It's one of the most-recorded songs in the English (or Portugese) language, and now that we've been listening to it for more than four decades (it came out the same year as The British Invasion), it's nice to recall how fresh, sensuous and seductive it seemed when it first breezed through the airwaves. For some reason, female singers have taken to altering the gender, and singing about "The Boy from Ipanema," which not only misses the point, but ignores the fact that a female singer introduced the song. Astrud Gilberto is the detached observer, watching the guy watching the girl. Maybe Astrud has her own eye on the guy, and is wistfully wishing that he'd switch his gaze...Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of the most gifted melodists ever, and this is perhaps his signature achievement, but you'd also have to consider "Dindi," and "Corcovado," and maybe a dozen others. Here are Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, from the film "Get Yourself A College Girl":

  2. mktackabery says and let's not forget the warm, dulcet tones of the great Stan Getz, one of the most heart-breakingly humane sax men ever.

  4. lucyintheskies says i was in northampton visiting a friend and we were sitting in this tiny pasta place having dinner together. this song came on and we both unconsciously started singing along. it is this keen moment of connection and a realization of how deep this song is in the musical psyches. thanks for this. it is perfect on a late saturday afternoon. lucy.

  5. Spike says It's wonderful to finally be able to see her sing. She looks so innocent and real. What an audience! I like how the film's recording is slightly different from the hit. The 4-mallet vibraphonist must be Gary Burton. Whenever I hear a live classical music singer's screechy vibrato, I wonder what the melody would sound like with a PA system and Astrud Gilberto.

  7. dermahrk says Very very nice. I love that song. And she is beautiful. But: how wooden is that performance? I'm glad she kept blinking and moving around so I knew she was still breathing. The hairdo and that goddam bow didn't do her any favors either. And - are those Hollywood B-girls that make up the audience supposed to be college co-eds? In yer dreams, college-boy.
