I remember reading in an article that Burt Bacharach said he never wrote a rock song, and I've tried to figure out what he must have meant by that. I suppose it depends on what his definition of "rock" is, because while it's obvious that the vast majority of his songs are intricate, soulful ballads, or catchy pop confections, or modern-art songs (like his Costello collaborations), there are a few rocking things in his catalog, from the early Gene McDaniels hit "Tower of Strength," to the twangy '60s Tom Jones movie theme "Promise Her Anything," to, arguably, The Shirelles' (and The Beatles') "Baby It's You," to "What's New Pussycat" (a rock waltz?), and The Drifters' "Please Stay."And "My Little Red Book," one of my favorite Bacharach-David songs. Bacharach supposedly doesn't like Love's version (they messed up the timing, or something), and he probably wouldn't care for The Standells' take on it, either. He did endorse the Manfred Mann original (which Costello uses as the framework for his live version posted here), and I can kind of see what he means; that has a more subtle Bacharachian thing going on. But the fact that Love found a classic rock nugget in there must mean that Bacharach planted it:Bacharach turned 80 in May of '08, by the way, and I didn't post anything to celebrate that particular milestone, so this is a bit belated, but Happy Birthday. Is this a rock song?:
