"Reprise," the first feature by Norwegian director Joachim Trier, is a contemporary new wave (newer wave?) film that has the spark of '60s Godard and Truffaut, and touches on themes (male friendship and competition, romantic obsession, literary ambition and pretension) that might have been plucked from those breathtaking movies. But for all its debt to those directors (the detached, conditional-tensed narrator; the snatch of music by George Delerue; the Anna Karina-esque object of camera fixation), Trier's movie is something new. It rocks to the sounds of The Jam, New Order, and Joy Division, and a punk-rock band called Kommune whose signature song is "Fingerf***ed By The Prime Minister." In a central party scene, everyone springs to life when an iPod is plugged into the sound system, and we hear Le Tigre's "Deceptacon," itself a new-retro moment, with its jittery beat and "rama lama ding dong" quotations. I just watched the UK DVD, but MIramax just released the film theatrically in the U.S., and if you can find it, jump on it.
Oh, I was going to post about the Van Halen and X shows I saw this weekend, but suffice to say, rock lives.

Hey I just finished watching Reprise. It was truly amazing. Beautifully shot, touching on many levels, funny, with mesmerizing editing. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention.
How did you feel about the chosen ending? Do you think that it was an appropriate part for a film that was made out of hypothetical or not time pieces, or that a movie that's a bit of a portrait of certain people should have a more solid ending?
Hey...Glad you caught up with this film; I remember being quite moved by the ending, and felt it made sense within the framework of the film, but I should watch it again with your comments in mind.
So, how has your move worked out? How was your summer in your new place?
Thanks for posting your note. Everyone I've told about 'Reprise' has wondered how such a special movie slipped through the cracks.
Thank you for putting the movie on my radar. It's now in my precious film list :)
I moved in the UK in September, actually. The way of life suits me just fine, and everything has been great so far! The only gray spot is the find-a-job one. As I'm sure you know, the music industry is a hard field for someone to crack his way into, and the international financial crisis makes it even harder, but I'm not giving up :)
