young girls are coming to the canyon

Posted about 4 years ago
On the flight to Burbank's Bob Hope Airport, I read this newish book about the LA pop culture of the '60s and '70s:And when I landed, I found myself in a taxi winding through Laurel Canyon, to the house where The Bridges are recording their debut album. The Bridges are a family band (three sisters, a brother, and a girl cousin) from Oxford, Alabama, and, conflict-of-interest disclaimer here, I'm kind of crazy about them and I've become involved in their blossoming career (see page 30 of the new issue of Paste for more biographical info on the band).I'm wowed by their melodies and harmonies, by the way they remind me of the melancholy side of sunshine pop, the way Brittany's lead vocals are happysad, and how the sisters buoy her up, by how Issaca and Stacey always seem to be hugging each other. I get the feeling Natalie's going to be the Christine McVie of the family, and I can imagine drummer Jeremy becoming a girl-target, if his sisters and cousins let any predators near him.Their album will be out this summer. We're arguing about the title at the moment, but it's altogether likely that they will win me and their manager over. It's kind of hard to say no to them.

  1. dachmo says Wow, looking forward to the album. I just checked out their Myspace and they have a few live videos. Great sound. How old are they?

  2. emscee says Isacca (bass, second from left) is the youngest at 17. I think Brittany (center) is the oldest (23), but Natalie (right) is around the same age. Jeremy and Stacey are somewhere in the middle, age-wise.

  3. dachmo says I'm still waiting on my Paste subscription to kick in. I'm hoping the new Feb issue will be arriving soon. I'm just wondering but are their parents musicians? how did they tap into such an old sound at such a young age?. If thats all covered in Paste then I'll just read about it later.

  4. Spike says They show a lot of promise. This song could be a hit. The right producer could tweak the arrangement a little, how I don't know. Perhaps they could end each verse with a five-syllable hook-phrase instead of "whoa."

  5. Mike the Knife says That's a vibe and sound I like. (And there is def something about cruising through the Canyon...)

  8. emscee says I'd never been there before; I certainly prefer it to LAX. Yeah, it was a quick, last-minute trip so I could hear The Bridges' basic tracks and see them at Hotel Cafe, and then I turned around. Thanks for your birthday wishes. Later, mc

  10. Bartleby says I'm with Mahrk. I find it hard to believe it's a demo. I quite enjoy the soulful vocals. The whole ensemble sounds more than promising. By all means, do let us know when the album is out for more thorough delight!!!
