YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

great escape

    Dewey Cox & Darlene Madison

    Let's Duet
There are a bunch of reasons I like going to Nashville; sometimes, like this week after a couple of shots at the new tequila bar Agave, I think about moving there, making records, getting fat, and marrying a cute cocktail waitress. This will not happen. A few blocks from the Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel is one of my favorite record stores, Great Escape. I find LPs there, mostly country and mainstream pop, that I never see anywhere else. The other day I picked up a Louvin Brothers tribute album to the Delmore Brothers, one of the rarer Jerry Lee Lewis country albums on Smash, a Keely Smith album of standards, and some country duet albums: Dolly & Porter, George & Tammy, Merle & Bonnie....I love the give and take on these records, the song titles ("Why Don't You Haul Off & Love Me"), the little comic dramas, the vocal blends. It's such a neat genre.

  1. Mike the Knife says I love that you tagged this with the Dewey & Darlene "duet." Got a real kick out of the film from whence it comes, although I can say no more at this time, since I'm honoring the review embargo until opening.

  2. Mike the Knife says Did I mention that I worship Jenna Fischer? Even more now that I've seen her as Darlene Madison?

  3. emscee says I've been listening to the "Walk Hard" soundtrack, and eagerly await the film (and Jenna as Darlene). So, Mike, they're reviewing the movie right now on "Ebert & Roeper"...can't you sneak us an "early review" like Roeper and A.O. Scott (they both thumbs-upped it)?

  4. Mike the Knife says I was asked by the studio reps to wait until closer to the release date, but those clowns on TV always seem to jump the gun. I'll probably post something soon, but for now, I'll just say that I had a great time watching it, enjoyed all the inside jokes more than I should have, and continue to worship Jenna Fischer.

  6. Spike says Looks like you found some great LPs. Who knows what would have happened to them if you hadn't saved them.

  7. Jonh Ingham says What I find wonderful about the world of music we've left behind is that without really paying attention to country music, I remember both of those album covers. I love the Dolly and Porter cover - you know exactly what you're going to get with that one. The George and Tammy one...hmmm....they look like they're trying to airbrush some glamour into their brawlin' drinkin' life.
