There are a bunch of reasons I like going to Nashville; sometimes, like this week after a couple of shots at the new tequila bar Agave, I think about moving there, making records, getting fat, and marrying a cute cocktail waitress. This will not happen. A few blocks from the Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel is one of my favorite record stores, Great Escape. I find LPs there, mostly country and mainstream pop, that I never see anywhere else. The other day I picked up a Louvin Brothers tribute album to the Delmore Brothers, one of the rarer Jerry Lee Lewis country albums on Smash, a Keely Smith album of standards, and some country duet albums: Dolly & Porter, George & Tammy, Merle & Bonnie....
I love the give and take on these records, the song titles ("Why Don't You Haul Off & Love Me"), the little comic dramas, the vocal blends. It's such a neat genre.
