MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

"That's Why" has one of my favorite lines in rock and roll:"If Shakespeare thought that JulietReally loved Romeo from the time they metHe would blow his top if he could seeJust how you've been lovin' me"That first generation of great protosoul singers is in danger of being forgotten. You don't hear much about Clyde McPhatter, the amazing singer from The Dominoes and The Drifters who had such a strong influence on Elvis Presley and Phil Spector. Or Pookie Hudson from The Spaniels. Everyone knows Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, but many others are slipping through the cracks of history.Jackie Wilson replaced McPhatter in The Dominoes, and then had a bunch of classic hits, starting with "Lonely Teardops." He was one of the first R&B artists I ever saw live (at a Brooklyn Fox Murray The K show), and he's still one of the best. His career was littered with shady business deals, too-floridly-produced records, and finally, a tragic end (he never recovered from a collapse on stage, and died after years in a coma). But man, could he sing.Van Morrison wrote a song in tribute:James Toback used Wilson's version of the country song "You Don't Know Me" (also covered by Ray Charles and Elvis Presley) in the film "Two Girls and a Guy." You should try and find that track. And get any collection of his Brunswick stuff. You'll be bugged, perhaps, by the strings and the background singers, but you'll hear one of the founding fathers of soul.

  2. Spike says Amen to everything you and ivylander said as well. Onstage Jackie Wilson could move his body doing splits and twirls so gracefully while singing. You might enjoy this hard-to-find early version of the hoary warhorse "Danny Boy" from his first LP, where his vocal pyrotechnics have beauty as well as bling. The Van Morrison video is terrific. He's best when he's constrained by a conventionally constructed song, as he is here, but his own songs sometimes send him too far afield. Speaking of going too far afield, or at least risking it (but continuing your Wilson-Ireland connection), listen to a straight version of "Danny Boy," sung by Delores Keane.

  3. Bartleby says Hearing Jackie Wilson sing is always such a joy. And reading about him brings back of memories of my father relating his first musical loves which includes Jackie, The Dominoes, The Platters, Fats Domino, Chubby Checker. Thanks for this trip down memory lane with the Old Man.

  4. Jonh Ingham says I'll put in the props for Clyde McPhatter. What a voice, and with the Drifters, part of a vocal machine of great beauty and subtlety.
