new old neil

Posted over 5 years ago
Its a rare, sweet thing when you can put on a new Neil Young & Crazy Horse recording of all of your favorite old songs. I bought in to Neil at the ripe age of 13, when my older sister forced "After the Goldrush" on me. It took me a little while to get it (not long for a 13-year old) but since then he's been closer to my heart than any other musician.I was prepared to love this recording, but the fact that it opens with "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", a song surely to pick up even the most dramatic shoe-gazer, followed by a short but sweet list of perfect songs, just sent me over the moon.

  5. elizabeth says I would give anything to be at one of the old Neil/Crazy Horse concerts! I was lucky enough to see them play with Sonic Youth in 1991, and I managed to get my (relatively small) self into the mosh pit with a bunch of big guys who were kind of looking out for me .. aw .. what a great show that was. One thing I'm really bummed about is not going to see Neil play with Joanna Newsom at the Berkeley Community Theater a few years ago. I truly believe she is the female Bob Dylan!

  6. steve simon says i have seen neil about 6 or 7 times with crazy horse, solo, CSN&Y, but to see him back then would have been to die for. i bet michael goldberg has some tales form the day. joanna newsom? wow, i have never heard of her.....and any female dylan is good enough for me

  7. elizabeth says Wow. OK. She is part of the Freak Folk scene, though I think her music transcends many genres. Stylistically, she is similar to kate Bush, Bjork, Joni Mitchell and Ricki Lee Jones (all rolled into one, if you can imagine), and her lyrics are absolutely brilliant .. up there with Dylan.Oh, nad she is a master harpist, too. The only thing is her voice is kind of grating, so some people are immediately turned off. She has 2 albums now, "The Milk-Eyed Mender", which is just her voice and her harp, and is exceptionally beautiful. If her voice bothers you, give it a few more listens and see if she sinks in. Her new Album, "Ys", is a much fuller sound, with strings and horns, and her voice is slightly more mature. I find both albums completely mesmerizing.

  8. d0gstar says my one time seeing Neil was on the Rust Never Sleeps tour in '78. FANTASTIC show, but I do want to see him again before I die - partly because, well, it was the seventies, and there are parts of the show I just don't recollect very well. Sorry I missed him with SY and Social D back in 91 - I'm sure that was a great show, Elizabeth.
