The randomness of hearing new music

Posted over 5 years ago
I had a bit of a 'High Fidelity' moment this week. I was at a record store, and asked the clerk what was playing on the stereo at the time. He sort of rolled his eyes and looked at the jewel case and said, as if I were the uncoolest person alive, "Uh, The Album Leaf". Now, a record store isn't a weird place to hear new music, but the timing of me being there at the time they played it, and me being in a receptive mood for their style, *is* random. My point is, being able to expand your music collection and taste at a point in one's life when most of your college buddies are still listening to Hagar-era Van Halen, is a very satisfying thing. Especially when you don't expect it...

  2. Moof says Hear, hear. Long, long ago I found Zakk Wylde's "Book of Shadows" this way, which is just a beautiful record from start to finish and something I would have _never_ otherwise found. I also found Creed's "My Own Prison" that way months before they started getting serious attention. So I was able to enjoy that album for a time before the band's antics and their critics constant harping made it hard to even say "Creed" without cringing. Which is fortunate because it really is a decent album when you forget about all of Stapp's subsequent hullabaloo.
