Sounds of Home

Posted over 3 years ago
Wow, the Beirut album reminds me of home...No, not of my home, nor of the town where I was born, nor of any place I've ever lived or visited. No, this album reminds me of a time and place before I was born. The place where my great-grandparents were born, lived, and thankfully escaped. It is a place that I have felt drawn to all my life, but never had the opportunity to go. It is a place of simple pleasures, crumbling villages, melancholy humor, hope in the face of poverty. Listening to ths album makes me empathize with anyone who has been displaced, exiled, or otherwise forced to leave for something better, but longs for home. The taste, smells, sounds of home. There's nothing quite like that feeling, and I've only had a taste. How could a nineteen-year-old kid from New Mexico so beautifully evoke an era so far removed from his own? It's pure brilliance.

  2. tybees says ??The Gulag Orkestar?? is definitely one of my top 5 albums this year, maybe #1. Every person that I've showed it to loves it. You pretty much said it all.
