MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Recently Bob Dylan made comments about how the quality of music has gone to shit over the past few years. Not necessarily the songwriting, but how it is actually recorded. You know, pro tools and all that crap. Well I have currently been addicted to Nebraska by The Boss. In particular "Highway Patrolman". I don't think people write songs like this anymore. There aren't lyrics written like this anymore. I think Dylan is right in his assement of the current state of affairs in recording, but I think it goes even further to the song writing itself. It may be the mass saturation of media coming at us from all angles has diluted the value of what we hear, or maybe I'm just completely jaded.

As far as the recording aspect, just take a look at any pro-tooled album that has come out recently. There are no notes hit, there are no live recordings as a "band". I mean seriously, the idea of a band doesn't even exist anymore. Just get everyone to play there part and piece it together. This is a seriously rambling entry, but I was reading in Rolling Stone about Zeppelin about how they were so tight as a live act. They knew what they were going to do. There are hardly any bands that can even play anymore. I guess there are exceptions, but I feel like I need to search harder and harder to find them. That kinda sucks.

Hopefully something comes along to change the way things are done around these parts.
