Grunezella Daze
For some reason I woke up today with a Tracy Chapman song stuck in my head. While I don't have anything particularly against her music (and have been known to sing along with abandon), I've tended to be leaning more towards Sleater-Kinney lately and Tracy's but you can say baby wasn't exactly welcome. So, I pulled some Salem 66 out of my computer. Salem 66 is one of those bands that has always stuck with me, and that can be counted on in times of crisis. They "are the influential older sisters of many current women-led rock bands... despite their off-kilter melodies and clashing, not-always-melodic singing, they created a churning, idiosyncratic pop sound that was loaded with smarts and enthusiasm..."Grunezella Daze has always been one of my Salem 66 favorites. The descriptive moments, images, and sensations that the lyrics conjure up in my mind bring me back to my living room in the The Most Beautiful Apartment Ever (and the cheapest too) on Alderson Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, circa 1988 or so. That's more or less a good place to be. In any case, it has cured the Chapman.
