WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

In Praise Of Good Songwriters, Part 6

Posted over 2 years ago
Ex-Ash guitarist Charlotte Hatherley recently released her 2nd solo album "The Deep Blue" (in the UK - it's available as an import here). I didn't really dig the first single "I Want You To Know", which has one of the worst videos of all time, so the video for the other single from the record was a really pleasant surprise."Behave" really sneaks up on you, like the best songs. The video really blew me away, reminds me of Tron, and work by Moebius from Heavy Metal magazine back in the 80's. The whole sci-fi angle is really unexpected given the lyrics of the tune. Her guitar playing is twangy, funky and twisted. This is really different, interesting pop music, with a brilliant video - quite a rare combo these days. I've got the CD on order, so I'm not sure how the album is as a whole, her last album was pretty spotty. "The Deep Blue" is on Charlotte's own label apparently, and to have produced such a superb video, and a memorable song, seems quite an accomplishment - hopefully it bodes well for the rest of the album.Check out "Behave" - hope you like it:

  1. 1234chainsaw says The Deep Blue is much more varied and adventurous in sound than her debut, although I really like the debut as well for its sunny, hook-laden pop. "Behave" was actually the first single for the album (it's been out since late last year). I definitely agree with you that it's better than "I Want You To Know," but the album has some even better songs. There have been quite a few Charlotte posts on MOG in the past 5 or months. Mike The Knife reviewed the album pretty well, in case you're interested.

  2. ebuzzmiller says yep, i was pretty late on the train with this record, i know there have been other reviews, although the video links on those all seem to be broken! I was really surprised how bad Charlotte looked in "I Want" - the song didn't really grab me either. I liked a few songs on her debut, "Summer" especially, but I think "Behave" is better than anything on there. If there are better songs on the album than that, it should be a killer. Thanks for the post!

  3. mktackabery says I adore "Behave," I got so hooked on it for a while I was spinning it like 12 times a day, and who does that anymore? I have been hooked on two ladies named Charlotte lately, both of the British persuasion: Hatherley and Gainsbourg. My favorite track off of Charlotte Gainsbourg's solo album is called "Little Monsters" and has a bit of a twist at the end:

  4. ebuzzmiller says That's funny Michelle, I picked up CG's record while I was in LA, mostly because Air did the music, and I love a lot of their stuff. It's funny, but I think both the new Air record (Pocket Symphony) and the CG record are about half good - put them both together and you've got one great album!

  5. mktackabery says hmm, yeah I can see that ebuzz, there are a couple of stinkers on both records that's for sure. :)
