Tears For Fears put out a 12" of "The Way You Are" between the release of their debut album "The Hurting" and their massive worldwide hit "Songs From The Big Chair". Mass exposure for Tears For Fears kind of ensured that history would not look back on them kindly, and their pre-mega "Songs" material is somewhat overlooked, which is a shame. "The Hurting" sounded really different to anything else out at the time, both sonically and in terms of the lyrical themes they were exploring. The album got super heavy rotation on my turntable throughout 1983, and I bought every import 12" they put out, which usually had unreleased live tracks or demos. "The Way You Are" 12" had a couple of great things on it; an extended version of the single (which is available on the remastered version of The Hurting as a bonus track), which is almost 8 minutes long and never gets boring; a superb live version of "Start Of The Breakdown" from The Hurting; and a very interesting instrumental called "The Marauders" (which is a bonus track on the remastered version of Songs From The Big Chair). I met Roland Orzabal during the "Elemental" tour, and told him that "The Marauders" reminded me of Brian Eno's "Another Green World", and he smiled and told me I had good taste in music :-)"The Way You Are" - a 1983 non album track from my favorite period of Tears For Fears - an essential 80's track!
