Paul Raven, bass player for Killing Joke (as well as Ministry, Prong and numerous other bands) was found dead from an apparent heart attack today. www.undercover.com.au
Sad news, so I want to give the guy some respect. During a period of the 80's when a lot of English bands that I had once loved (The Damned, I'm looking at you) seemed to be getting progressively wimpier and fey, Killing Joke was one few to buck the trend. Damn they put out some good music.
Check this out...
Cheers to you Mr. Raven.
No, I'm not going to make a joke about "nevermore".

There are a lot of songs that are great driving songs... depending upon the time of day and my state of mind, but the song that always makes me think of a long road trip where I have been up all night, just me and the road, is Screenwriter's Blues by Soul Coughing.
Imagine my delight to find that a video for it has finally been posted on youtube.
For all of you fellow driving enthusiasts, enjoy...

man this song seems like it would be perfect for driving around in NY at around 3 am. I have not seen a lot of Soul Coughing posts on MOG, these guys are great.
man, I know - and not just driving, but driving + smoking + tunes + night = favorite place to be....but the guilt! The guilt! The romance of the open road is such an ingrained metaphor, at least here in N. America. How will we ever convince people to give up this bond they have with their car in order to stop the pollution?
I know, what a downer. I'll go now....

I read a recent post by Rawkkiddo wherein he got some bad news about an ex-student of his. He stated that he needed to hear some good cheerin' up music. But no "in your face punk".
I felt moved to post something, and started looking through my digital collection. It surprised me to find that I didn't have any cheerin' up music. "Are you kidding me?", I asked myself. But the evidence was there.
Sure there was lots of upbeat stuff, and some of it wasn't even "in your face punk", but although listening to it can cheer me up, it wasn't necessarily "cheerin' up" music. What the hell is the matter with me? Nearly 1000 songs on my itunes and nothing to cheer Rawkkiddo up with. Disgraceful.
Fortunately, just as I was beginning to think I was in need of a good old smack upside the headd; I found it... the one song that fit the criterion. Possibly the best cheerin' up song there is. At least in my books.
Hope this helps Rawkkiddo...

"the one song that fit the criterion." The only one and only, eh? Haha. That's a funny story.
I was told that 90% of the songs written are about 'love' and the other 10% is the stuff I listen to. I'm not an angry or apathetic person or anything like that. The musicians and their music that interests me usually write about everything other than love. I'll have to dig through my collection and find those 1 or 2 songs that are actually inspiring and post them.
Thanks for sharing, eastvanmungo.
