Kasey Chambers

Heres some Kasey Chambers, shes not a Kiwi but shes from our west island (Australia), Rumor has it she grew up traveling the outback with her family, sleeping on a van. Her Dad was a fox hunter. Hes also a great country musician along with her brother. She has played with some of the great muso's of the world and recently released an album with Shane Nicholson but heres a few of her earlier tunes. I cant find a vid of the one I like the best called "we're all gunna die someday"

These young ladies are another great team coming up through the mist over here in Aotearoa, Ive seen them live a couple of times as a duo and with a band, they do a great performance, very convincing, kinda reminds me of early T.Rex, lyrically they take you into a world of fairies and pixies and all things magical.

Chanelle Davis and Daniel Munro

I met these two very talented young people at some songwriting awards last year here in Aotearoa, Chanelle won the awards and Daniel came second. They were both extremely good. I met them at the same awards again this year as we all had songs in the top 10 again. No luck for any of us this year but I'm keen to see these two get some traction, Daniel has opened for Eric Clapton on tour over here and Chanelle has represented the NZ music industry at the Sydney song summit this year. They are solo muso's and sound great together and seem like great young ambassadors for Kiwi music so I thought I would give them a plug. Heres a pretty honest impromptu home vid of them both

This line up is Shayn Wills guitar, Harmonica and vocals, Freddie Limbert drums and Bullfrog Rata bass, these guys are working what I call the coal face of the NZ music scene, that is Pubs, Parties, cafes, festivals and anywhere else they can. They can go at that pace for many hours and each of them is a legend over here in their own right.
they once played for 5 hours non stop at my roof on party, nearly blew the dam roof back off!
I will post a vid of Bullfrog next up.
sorry for the bad quality vid but it was all I could find

Just finished soaking in a full hot bath, lying back listening to Ryan Adams. Lavender oil in the burner, candles burning and a beer. I dont think a week has gone by with out 2 or 3 listens to Ryan Adams in the two or three years since Ive was introduced to his stuff.
I bought all the CD's I could find of his.
This one of my favorites, it misses Emmylou Harris as on the Cd version but its raw and real. Cant remember or find which Cd its off right now.

I met the Gas guy in a pub one night, he had just done a really bizarre poetry gig.
I was telling him about a movie I had seen, he interrupted me to tell me that he was the main actor, that kinda floored me, I stood back and sure enough, how bizarre. Anyway he turned up in this music vid a year or two later.

I just finished extracting honey and I'm all sticky all over, solar panels haven't heated the water enough for a warm shower yet so I'm surfin.
I grew up in a small rural area and over the years the farms have been subdivided up and urban folk have migrated into the fields, it causes a bit of grief as we all try to adjust to each others reality but the land usually wins the battle.
Heres a song I wrote about that transition called walking into you. Maybe I posted it before, cant remember.
Heres a pic of us practicing in my dirt house.

Who are we?

I want to say thanks to all you people who wade through the music of the world and have the courage to say "here listen to this".
You get an insight into people from their music and their words and I reckon their are some pretty cool people out here in MOG land. You could be axe murderers for all I know but I get the feeling not!
I came here after finding out Fox owned myspace, I came here to move away from my creativeness being stifled by profit strategies.
I have a feeling the Rhapsody connection is on the same path, even if I wanted to pay to have this music I cant because Rhapsody doesn't operate in NZ.
As some of you are aware I am a musician, I don't believe in stealing stuff but I do believe that musicians are not "GODS" they are people painting a musical picture of what they see out there in the world, our world.
I appreciate both the giving and receiving and one is not possible without the other and that is the yin and yang of it.
If I like a song or two off a CD I will seek it out and buy it or preferably go to a live performance. We are doing some great advertising and this is part of the trade off.
What really gets up my nose is middle men, money counters that have big bank accounts and no soul, who feed off real people like parasites. Im asking you all are they driving this MOG thing?
I will leave you all today with a poem I wrote a few years back.

Obituary for truth

Lets have three minutes silence
For our friend the truth
Beaten into submission
Battered beyond recognition
Committed to the institution
Of denial and obstruction
Reluctantly succumbing
To the systematic destruction
Once know to all humanity
As the pinnacle of honesty
Finally destroyed
By the manipulation monastery

ps. My name is Dean Murray, I live in the country in New Zealand where I grow my own fruit, veges and meat, Ive got four great kids and a lovely wife.
I have a really slow "high speed" internet connection and deep love of community both local and global

These days she can be seen at many festival and music events, real down to earth young woman, this is off her first album, Kei te Mihi

I just wanna be a muso

Often musicians and artists who haven't become "Gods" are supported by their partners, or family or work days in the factory and play for love in the nights.
Sometimes if you have a smart government you can get funded by them.
In New Zealand we have a few schemes where you can apply for funding, but there is not much to go around a heap people.
I recently spent 3 whole days stuck at this dam computer writing two funding applications, Im a song writer not a report writer and man they are a mile apart, lucky for me a friend changed my words from a story to a pretty smart application, it wont know for 3 months if the very slim chance I have will pay off but at the end I did begin to understand why you have to write what seemed like total obvious crap, they cant see whats going on in my head (luckily) and they don't know me from a bar of soap. Last of all I gave them my MOG address and one of them may check this out so I better be nice, well I am nice but right now I feel like some one has pulled a garden rake over my brain and writing that report did it.
Anyway heres Lou Reed look at him long enough and he might smile

Memories of the mid 70's New Zealand music

When I was 14 years old in 1974 I remember these guys coming on the newly bought colour TV, I was totally blown away by these guys, Space waltz, Ive still the vinyl in my collection, looks a little dated but then so do I. I
Ive also posted the earliest Splitenz Video I can find, they were a couple of years latter in 1976, they have some really bizzare videos,I read somewhere that and Auntie ofone of the band members used to come during their early shows and tap dance, check em out, I showed it to my son and he laughed and said yeah they're Emo's, I suppose all you guys know about Emo's, well I do too now.

Good sounds from the west island

I stumbled on this guys cd in a music shop,I had heard Powderfinger(the ausiie rock band he sings with) but I was more than surprised to hear what he did in his solo career
tea and sympathy is a great cd, filled up with love my baby songs that I would usually take the piss out of but they are done so well.
Anyway I caught him live in a small pub in Wellington and it was one of those shows that will always stick in my mind, bloody awesome

Over her in Aoteroa(New Zealand we have a really strong reggae movement,it has flavoured many a muso's set list and most are political to some degree.
Im reluctant to select any in particular as most are very good but Ive seen these guys a few times and their live show is outstanding so Im starting with them.
KORA! this one of their slower more traditional reggae songs, they are touring the world so catch em if you can

Heres another one of my recently recorded songs that has some growing to do.
"Every bodies famous" was inspired by the culture we have in may towns in NZ of waving at the locals as you drive past and often it extends to waving at who ever drives past which can confuse visitors.
Its a great custom though and Im sure it happens in many other small towns around the world.
Ive have been in other towns in a vehicle that must be similar to a well know local and had every other car waving out, it was so cool when I saw the same old van as mine parked on the hill when I left.
Ive got a bit of harmonica to add to this next time I visit the studio

watching the baby grow

Well hey, Ive been working on some new recordings and to start with I go off to the studio and record just me and the gat and then Ian from Muddyboots records and I see what jumps to mind for the next step.
Sometimes we have done nothing else but usually they take us on a real journey, its hard for me personally to know where that journey might go.
I don't often have much more than what I call the bones, the bare melody and words and Ian takes them on the next part of the journey, I get involved when I hear something I like or don't like or get an idea but he's got skills for growing the song and I trust him.
Anyway Ive decided that Id like to share the bones with anyone who's reading this and from time to time I'm gunna give you an update on the songs journey.
Even better if some of you muso's out there have and idea and a half decent recording device why don't you add something on and send it back to me at<a href="mailto: murrayz@clear.net.nz

I want to say thanks to all those people who take a risk and say what floats their boat so the reader can go take a listen or look or taste or whateva
All of a sudden I feel Im running out of hours to go meet all the cool people in world.

The New Gods

Have we replaced our old gods with new musical gods? Places like this are full of very interesting stuff about what the new gods are up to. These gods are a little easier to communicate with than the traditional gods, they sing to us, they sleep with each other, they get stoned, arrested, shot, divorced, they get themselves into places we can only dream of, they give us something to look up to.
The new gods have lots of power and some of them try to save the world or feed the world and we look further up to them.
They write songs about the emotional things that move us.
Its not just music either there are sporting gods as well and many others.
I wonder if they realise how many people are praying to them and what that means
I wonder if they want the job?
They do their thing and we pay for it and hang off every word, try to figure out what makes them tick in the hope that its the same thing as us or something similar.
They get to play music and make heaps of money. Sounds like a good plan to me but then I like planting the garden and moving the cows, watching my son playing football and lots of other stuff too but I still keep writing songs and secretly deep down inside I hope one day I might be a new god.
Anyway heres my Christmas song to cheer you up........................... knot
Hey by the way if anyone wants to have the whole "Yeah Nah" CD in electronic version just let me know and I will cyber post it to ya

I rolled into the Levin folk club last night, its an old style folk club with old style people in there. They are very passionate about folk music and the room is usually quite full. You put your name on the list if you want to play and they have about 15 of those guys then a main act. Last night they had this guy called Andrew White and Im telling you if you get a chance to see that guy and his viola playing partner do it!
He was a guitar maestro, he gave us two hours of breath taking guitar playing. It was like sitting in room with Al Demiola or someone of that caliber. The word was out as there were people on the street and the little old scottish hall was jam packed and silent. Now and again you find your self somewhere pretty special and last night it was my turn

Festivals

Over here in Aotearoa (New Zealand) we have some great festivals and two of the better ones are The Organic River Festival and The Parihaka Peace Festival, both of these have a mixture of music, politics, workshops and they are family shows. A family show means to me a place you can cut your kids loose and they are safe.
The music crosses all genre and usually you paid bugger all for playing unless your some hot shot act with a good manager. Personally I like to negotiate tickets for my family and go hang out camping for a few days with some mates and I dont care if I get paid but then Im not relying on the money to pay bills in fact music owes me way more than Im likely to ever make out of it but man its given me some out there character building experiences and those are priceless.
Ive also been heavily involved in the management of one and I can tell you that can take you to some new places as well, not all good either but then Im guessing all festivals have the politics, lack of money and big ego's to deal with and at the good ones the punters dont notice.
One other cool thing is you dont get enough of any muso to get sick of them.
support your local festivals, thats one of the places where the music culture is grown

music festivals

Just recovered after two weekends camping out at two music festivals.
Thats the way to hear music, there will always be a little gem or two in there.
Over here most of the performers camp out too so it feels like a little village after a day or so and there is a social aspect to it and that gives the musicians an opportunity to mingle and can reduce the "GOD" effect that listeners often elevate their favorite performers to.
anyway heres a vid of me at last years Organic River Festival object width="425" height="355">

live music

Theres a big push over here in New Zealand right now to stop people copying music and even thought I spent some serious buck making a CD I gotta say I find it hard to agree with.
The recording is a by - product of a decent musician or group of musicians, part of what makes a muso good is their ability to rise up on the stage and deliver something memorable.
Most people know when they see it even if they cant quite describe it, or haven't felt it before themselves.
I saw Johnny Cash once and I only went because Willie Nelson was there but the truth is Johnny had a buzz going on that I will never forget, so did Willie but Johnny was the head man and everyone knew it. Most of the recordings of his I have heard dont even come close to what he dealt out that night.
Record companies have money as their first interest, the more the artist makes the more they make and they are mostly interested in repeating the recipe not growing the artist or nurturing them, of course this is not always the case but mostly.
These days a decent recording can be made on a home computer, enough to get the message out, its hard to beat the top vocal mics but the Beatles didn't have such awesome gear but they did ok with the early recordings by being innovative, the rest of the buzz was done on the stage live, so I say record you songs and give em away! heres 1 of mine called the blink of an eye

My best discovery so far this century has been Ryan Adams but I gotta say theres so much awesome music out there you can get dizzy looking.
Music and art have always given the makers the freedom to point out what really sucks out there without getting hung and what is totally awesome and everything in between, Im a third generation monetary reformist and I feel compelled to challenge the dictators, war mongers mad capitalists and any other thing or person that looks like wrecking the joint and write a bloody song about it!
By this way the first one is me!
