YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

Who are we?

I want to say thanks to all you people who wade through the music of the world and have the courage to say "here listen to this". You get an insight into people from their music and their words and I reckon their are some pretty cool people out here in MOG land. You could be axe murderers for all I know but I get the feeling not! I came here after finding out Fox owned myspace, I came here to move away from my creativeness being stifled by profit strategies. I have a feeling the Rhapsody connection is on the same path, even if I wanted to pay to have this music I cant because Rhapsody doesn't operate in NZ. As some of you are aware I am a musician, I don't believe in stealing stuff but I do believe that musicians are not "GODS" they are people painting a musical picture of what they see out there in the world, our world. I appreciate both the giving and receiving and one is not possible without the other and that is the yin and yang of it. If I like a song or two off a CD I will seek it out and buy it or preferably go to a live performance. We are doing some great advertising and this is part of the trade off. What really gets up my nose is middle men, money counters that have big bank accounts and no soul, who feed off real people like parasites. Im asking you all are they driving this MOG thing? I will leave you all today with a poem I wrote a few years back. Obituary for truthLets have three minutes silence For our friend the truthBeaten into submissionBattered beyond recognitionCommitted to the institutionOf denial and obstructionReluctantly succumbingTo the systematic destruction Once know to all humanityAs the pinnacle of honestyFinally destroyed By the manipulation monasteryps. My name is Dean Murray, I live in the country in New Zealand where I grow my own fruit, veges and meat, Ive got four great kids and a lovely wife. I have a really slow "high speed" internet connection and deep love of community both local and global

  1. indiepixie says hmmmm.....well interesting. gret post. i don't think this MOG thing is a conspiracy theory tho or run by money counters who have big bank accounts and no soul. I met the CEO David a while back at a music conference and have gotten to know him well. He is a huge and sincere music lover- who has grouped together the same kind of music lovers- to start a community of music appreciation. That's at least what I garner from it. If he was out to make a killing over this company- it would look a hell of a lot more like myspace- with neon blazing lights. I was born in sydne in the sun and grew up in Canada climbing trees, without grades, a free spirit. I'd like to think I still am- tho I live in the concrete fortress that is NYC. I have deep community love and a want to make the world a better place- whether it is showing ppl art and creating- or sharing a story that changes a life. Though we may look like strangers, I am sure we have a lot more in common than you may initially presume. I think you also may find that MOG brings you fellow cohorts to talk and muse about the world with. And enjoy great music? fair? cheers, indiepixie

  3. Cody B says This was my first online community and the only one I can stand to stick with, because it is mostly about the music. The non-music stuff is on the up and up too, and I've met real and cyber friends here. As a former marketing person in the music biz, I can sniff out some blatant promotion, but 98% of the time it is music junkies shootin' up..I can dig that.

  4. Cody B says Rhapsody was a little bit of a bummer, but I can understand that it is necessary to keep the place going..To tell the truth, other than a few ads, i don't even notice The Rt..well, except for the music player. Since you can upload without dealing with the R..it doesn't bother me.

  5. runobodyii says I find that there is soul here, yours, Dean Murray, contributing its earth-toned frequencies and Faith Anne's (am I getting that right?) its magenta glow, and mine the color of water, and some many others. Although I feel drawn to the possibility at times, we can't just withdraw our souls and give over the world to the money machine. Few weeks ago I wnt to see a Kahlo exhibit in Philly on the weekend, long queues to get near enough to look at each and every painting, body tense from trying to hold itself apart from the crush of the crowd. There were photos at the beginning that I didn't really want to see, so my friend and I separated and for that time moving through the gallery I felt so damned misanthropic, but when she joined me again and we moved through together I felt human again and the crowd around me human. I don't know how to make an explicit connection to the topic at hand, but I feel that it connects. We make a dwelling in the evening air, / In which being there together is enough. That's what I mean.

  6. levek says I think that it is people (the Moggers) who make MOG what it is, not Rhapsody. We are people who love and share music of all kinds in a most "oecumenical" way. As long as we can upload and share the music, we'll be alright.

  7. Jonh Ingham says Thanks for sharing your thoughts on being a musician in these p2p times. My only concern with Mog is that I don't see enough of the commercial side (ads and whatever) and keep wondering how it makes money to keep going. Looking forward to haring more of your creativity and the pointers you made to NZ artists and bands has been great.

  13. Hermes says Hi Dean, when I started here being a Mogger I was equally suspicious as you are. I've never been a big fan of what is called Web2.0 and all the hype around it, though beeing a serious nerd regarding the time I spend in front of computers. But with the time I recognized, that the people in here are music freaks as I consider myself beeing one and this is their primary impetus for beeing here: sharing music and thoughts around music, which are pretty much all possible kind of thoughs as music is able to express nearly every aspect of our lives. I have been away for a few months, what has been the time when Rhasody was "integrated" into MOG. I'm from Germany and it doesn't work here neither, so I don't care. Sometimes I'm also wondering, how this website can be kept alive, exactly because I don't have the feeling that this would be a primarily commercial site. If Rhapsody help keeping this community alive, I'm o.k. with that, as the small yellow button doesn't molest me. Nice post. Hope to hear a bit more of you soon.

  15. BarrieSutcliffe says Great post, read this on the front page. I agree in that I think Rhapsody is lame. I prefer the idea of people posting tracks from their own hard drives. Being in Sweden I don't think I can use Rhapsody either but I've never really bothered to try. I rarely troll around MOG actually, it seems that most people are talking about major label guff anyway, so I don't have time to care about it. Thankfully I have a few nice people in my friends list who seem to have a bigger breadth of taste. Hopefully those numbers will grow.

Being very new to MOG, these were the exact questions and reservations I have/had.

BTW the words to your songs are right on.  I support it!
