The "right" music in commercials

Posted over 5 years ago
Recently, American Express commercials aimed at small businesses have been playing the song "Gimme Some Money" by Spinal Tap (or, technically, the Thamesmen) in the background. Sure, the lyrics are appropriate; the credit card is, after all, giving a cash-back award or something. But it still strikes me as funny that a song parody is being used with a straight face.Kind of reminds me of when McDonalds (briefly) used the Shins' "New Slang" in a commercial. Clearly the higher-ups knew nothing about the "dirt in your fries" bit, but I'd like to think that the person who initially suggested using the song did.Anyway, any other inappropriate - or, if you're feeling generous - appropriate commercial soundtracks out there? Someone must pay attention to this stuff. After all, Amazon sells these, amongst others:

  1. Jess Horrible says I know, crazy right? The world of advertising can get pretty zany on the subconscious level. I don't pay attention to commercials much, but I bet you could start with those albums ;)
