Artist:Of Montreal, Electribass
Hi, pinkfish. Miss ya.Went to a a show at the Granada in Lawrence, Kansas last night featuring Of Montreal. I'm pretty sure I liked it. The opening band was from Tokyo, Japan, seven guys in suits and fedora hats called Electribass. They were a lot of fun, with good energy and stage presence. Their music was sort of a vaudeville meets '50s Chuck Berry rock-n-roll, with goofy masks, little dances, and lots of crowd participation. I'm not normally someone who waves his hands in the air, and waves them like he just doesn't care, but it was hard not to join in when they were so, well, so darn cute. Unfortunately I'm not real sure I'd buy an album from them; if I closed my eyes I couldn't imagine liking the band much. The lead singer from Of Montreal Kevin Barnes was quite a trip. He had three costume changes (not including one mid-song where a dumpy stagehand dressed in a skintight batman outfit ran out with a ladder and super long dress that Kevin slipped into to make a ten foot tall androgynous something). It seemed he was channeling a bit of Beck, Iggy Pop, and unmistakably, David Bowie. The music itself was fun. Of Montreal is very electronica, which I normally dislike, but they're not the moody-like-the-Pet-Shop-Boys kind. They use a lot of electronics and drumbeats but it's layered and intricate, and when mixed with Barnes' sometimes falsetto voice it works really well together. So, yeah. Go check them out.
