What's the deal with Coldplay?

Posted over 5 years ago
So, I'm sure that just about anybody if not everybody on here has heard a joke in relation to Coldplay, dubbing them twats or whatever, and I tried to think of why people claim such. I'm not defending them or shooting my own jokes at them, but out of pure curiousity, what did they do to be on the recieving end of numerous conversations, because I honestly don't know.

  1. deadmandeadman says Maybe because their sound is so totally generic, their songwriting both derivitive and mundane? Probably because they rode so high on so little.

  2. Jess Horrible says Yes, what he said. Their music is ok-not-great, real nice to listen to without pushing any scary boundaries. And then they had the nerve to tell the world they wanted to be the Biggest Band Ever. Pissed me right off.

  4. Wozniak says Repeated from another comment I made: "Coldplay lost my affection after I heard Radiohead’s The Bends. I went to 4 concerts on their last tour (3 of them free – I was volunteering with Oxfam) and had an alright time, but they’re not at all good live. The set lists don’t vary from show to show, and there’s no real energy on the stage. Their way of engaging the crowd is to drop yellow balloons during, you guessed it, “Yellow.” My reason for hating them was that I noticed, with X&Y, and then after hearing Radiohead for the first time, that they haven’t grown. Parachutes is their best, and it’s not even that good anymore – it’s easily 3 songs for singles, with filler. On the reverse side of the coin, Radiohead has grown tremendously and been innovative. Some people might not like their latter 3 albums, or maybe just Hail To The Thief, but I am very fond of their entire catalogue, and perhaps even fonder of Yorke’s The Eraser. I allow anybody to like Coldplay. That’s their perogative, but I’ll say that I used to like them, and now don’t. It’s not a matter of me looking down on someone for their taste, because that’s annoying and I’m not a big fan of condescension for condescension’s sake ."
