"Who Killed Amanda Palmer?" is a bit of a strange thing. It's not an entirely disimiliar thing to a Dresden Dolls record, but it's really obvious when listening to it that it's isn't. It's better for it in places, worse for it in places. But overall, it's still a really wonderful bit of music.
So the big question here is what do you get when you mix purveyors of piano goodness Amanda Palmer and Ben Folds and the answer is a good record, but not as good as either of them are capable of. There are some really amazing songs to be had here, but the truth of it is that sometimes you'll be completely jarred by the transition from one song into another. But if you enjoy the Dresden Dolls, then you'll be doing yourself a disservice to miss stuff like "Runs in the Family" and "Guitar Hero".
In the end, probably the worst part of the album is that it's best moments have a tendency to sound like The Dresden Dolls without the drums. Which isn't really shocking for what was meant to have been a quick side-project from someone who's been working with the same collaborator for years now. The important thing to keep in mind that, as a whole, it is a good album and I can only imagine Amanda Palmer as a solo act getting better and better as she puts out mroe on her own and moves a away a bit from the territory she already covers so well in her other work.
