I'm not sure which is worse: living in a city at/lower than river/sea level with access to higher ground in a continent or living in a small town on a plain between two moutain ranges on the highest ground on an island in the northern Pacific ocean. (The nearest state is 2,000 miles away, though there are other nearby islands that may not be hit by the hurricane.) My best wishes and prayers for the people of the Gulf Coast states.
