WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Joe Henderson in Japan

Posted over 2 years ago
Adam Kolker talked to us once about how he used to go see Joe Henderson at the Blue Note (or the Vanguard, I forget which). He said Hen' would take these long solos that went on for choruses and choruses, just gradually building up in intensity; Al Foster would just be there with him, matching that same level of intensity. Kolker asked us, what if you had that many levels of intensity? Same scale, just smaller increments. What if you could play that many fortes? How many fortes can you play right now?

So I'm listening to _Joe Henderson in Japan_, and I'm trying to understand it in the context of what Kolker was talking to us about.

  1. uvawitz says Adam Kolker is a badass bass clarinet player. I first heard him on this Bruce Barth album East and West. I haven't heard much of his tenor playing although I understand he did some stuff for Palmetto. I would be interested to know what he's up to. Do you know Kolker as a teacher or a colleague (as in fellow musician)?

  2. drkaufman says I knew him as a teacher. He's a visiting professor at UMass, and I probably never would have heard of him otherwise. His tenor playing is beautiful. I'm really into a record he recorded in Spain, called Meditacions. It's on the Satchmo Jazz label.
