I lucked out in the ticket lottery for The Arcade Fire's 5-show stand at Judson Memorial Church in NYC. My friend Alicia and I attended the Saturday night concert, the last of their run.The lights went out, and our boys and girls came in from the back of the church and waded through the audience. They set up shop in the middle of the crowd and began "Wake Up". Sing-along time. Chills. Here's a taste:As for the rest of the show, I felt like Jodie Foster in Contact: "No - no words. No words to describe it. Poetry! They should've sent a poet. So beautiful. So beautiful... I had no idea..." And if you want to hear for yourself, NPR's got you covered: here.Enjoy a few of my photos:These kids are VERY good. I've gotten so jaded by buzzed-about indie rock bands who never seemed to live up to their press when performing live. But this band deserves every ounce of praise they get for their shows. Pure energy and emotion. Believe the hype.

  6. kristiana says People keep asking who are the defining great bands of now? Who seems to have integrity and talent? Are getting huge but still making great, genuine music? Ladies and germs - The Arcade Fire.

  8. kristiana says I've read other goose-bump reviews. I'm just so glad there is a band capable of this right now. I realize things go in cycles, but the well has been dry for a long time it seems (in my opinion, what do I know?). So, anybody, what is it we love about The Arcade Fire so....?

  10. drewfonts says For me, I think it was how they didn’t let up for even a minute the whole time during the show. From the time they walked out into the audience to begin the first song… until the time they walked off stage (after their second encore, no less), this band gave everything they had to their fans. They were drenched in sweat. Instruments flew around the stage from one musician to another between songs. The violinist, Sarah, was singing her heart out on every song, even when it wasn’t into a mic. This band CARES . And all of this became even more amazing when, between songs, Win told the audience that the band had been sick all week and the crowds were empowering them! The Arcade Fire is a band full of people who truly believe in the power of their music. And you can feel that in the air at their shows. That’s why I love them.

  11. kristiana says I think you nailed it there. I love that they try all these different instruments too. And I LOVE it when bands just plow through their set like that, love the energy! I saw Q And Not U in...2003 I think it was? In a small venue. Same thing, freaking fantastic to be a part of. And the lyrics of course are smart but not preachy, poetic, yeah for sure. And all with beautiful, driving music behind it.

  12. kristiana says whoops - I don't know what's going on when comments get clipped like that. Anyways, was just saying that I saw Q And Not U in a small venue a few years back, same thing, just plowed through without pausing, even when they were exchanging instruments, one person was always keeping the beat/melody going. Great showmanship, energy! Great to be a part of too!
