Song of the Day: Lil Wayne - "Let the Beat Build"

Posted 3 months ago

Per Lil Wayne, the formula for "the greatest rapper alive" is simple: "Just a snare and the 808/Weezy Baby on the mic, D.O.A."

From 2008's massive Tha Carter III, "Let the Beat Build" is a study in delayed gratification. Producers Kanye West and Deezle provide a signature sample for the song's foundation—the soul-dripping falsetto of Eddie Kendrick (of The Temptations fame) on his 1972 smash "Day by Day". Wayne rides the sample and snare for a solid two minutes, and once the Roland 808 beat finally does arrive, he's warmed up for some typically goofy wordplay.

Like many of Wayne's rhymes, the song's lyrical focus is practically a lack of focus, as if by demonstrating his ability to scatterbrain and then brilliantly tie together, he's proving that boast about being the greatest.

Lately Lil W has had more scrambled lyrics. Still "one" of the best. For a more focused "gangsta" rap from Wayne check out his earlier work the first couple Carter LPs. Much more aggressive metaphors and focused thoughts. Now a true "mainstream" artist, Wayne has brought a "fuck it all, gangsta attitude", along with raw, unwritten lyrics, and incorporated-rock-influences, into the music spotlights around the world. Lil Wayne is a  true "pioneer" and will continue to influence the music scene for years to come, as long as he can survive himself.
