Song of the Day: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - "How Long Do I Have to Wait for You?"

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are among the foremost preservationists of late-1960's R&B, all the way down to their dusty names (guitarist Binky Griptite and drummer Homer "Funky-Foot" Steiweiss, to name a couple).
Frontwoman Jones struts like Tina, vamps like Aretha, and swings like Mavis Staples. Her Dap-Kings are most popularly known for their retro-soul backing of Amy Winehouse on her Grammy-collecting hit record Back to Black. Bassist Bosco Mann also mans the boards and writes the songs.
On "How Long Do I Have to Wait for You" from second album Naturally, Mann's production work reflects acute musical grace, precariously balancing his own tasteful playing with Steweiss' palpitating drums, Griptite's scratchy guitarwork, and the Dap-Kings' punchy horn section. Rising above all the instrumental fireworks is a pleading yet sunny vocal from Jones. When she sings "I'm in an awful state, baby," she doesn't quite sound at the end of her rope, but you're inclined to believe her anyway.

A fave of mine from their oeuvre..that cascading guitar part is most awesome. It always reminds me of this Inell Young tune
That certainly was a great use of the last 4 minutes (goofing off at work!)
Spectacularo! Like Cody said, this is a favored S.J. joint.
Agreement all around...I'm a guitar player and I adore Griptite's work on this track. That plus the drumming is really what makes this such a great, great tune for me.
Good track! I like my R&B old-school like this and Raphael Saadiq.
Saadiq is fantastic! Dude is dedicated to the old-fashioned (e.g., superior) way of making music.
Agreed :)
