Song of the Day: Death Cab for Cutie - "Cath..."

Posted over 2 years ago

From 2008's Narrow Stairs, "Cath…" is the kind of piercing, evocative character sketch Ben Gibbard seems to be able to write in his sleep.

As a bride poses for wedding photos, her unfortunate match is starkly revealed in the glare of flashbulbs. Cath's quiet desperations, ticking clocks, and her final resignation to a half-happy marriage are laid bare to the whole congregation.

Despite this severe portrait, Gibbard's voice offers only pity for a dying heart, concluding "I'd have done the same as you".

great song, I need to listen to more of these guys - but despite the endless reminders, I've made little headway. thanks!

They make misery sound so upbeat.

I highly recommend "A Movie Script Ending" from The Photo Album and "Your Heart Is An Empty Room" from Plans as a couple more good samples.

This song didn't stick out for me when I first listened to this album. I was in a different place musically, though. I'm enjoying this now.

    A slow-burner for me, too.
