First released in 1961 as a chart-busting single, Sam Cooke's original version of "Bring It On Home to Me" was a proper, polite R&B number. Easy tempo and smooth vocals belied most of Cooke's lyrical beggin' and pleadin', directed at a girl who cheated on him before saying goodbye.
But on Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963, with a sufficiently rowdy band and playing to an even rowdier audience, Cooke strips bare the bluesy essence of the song. Here, what many consider the greatest soul voice of all time sounds almost sandpapered and desperate, but still plenty powerful. Cooke even changes the words a bit ("That ain't all Sam'll do for you"), to further whip the ladies into a frenzy…or maybe because he really meant it this time.

Wonderful. I've never heard Sam Cooke sound like this. Plus, '61 is before my time, so I remember this song as covered by the British Invasion bands of the 60s (The Zombies and The Animals, for two).
This is music that matters. Mr Cooke puts the audience in his pocket & together they bring it on home.
As ever and forever. so fine!
