Violinist Andrew Bird first surfaced in the mid-1990's as an accomplice of retro swing/jazz revivalists the Squirrel Nut Zippers. His subsequent solo output—if much more experimental—reveals a similar love of antiqued and exotic musics.
On "Fake Palindromes" from The Mysterious Production of Eggs, Bird's multi-tracks his violin for a Middle Eastern/Indian motif. He pairs it with his typically quirky lyrics, rife with non sequiturs and archaic terms. The song addresses trepanation, a medical procedure of boring a hole in the skull to release pressure or fluids. "Palindromes" might be just catchy enough to require such an operation.
