Song of the Day: The National - "Apartment Story"

Hailing from The National's stellar 2007 album Boxer, "Apartment Story" seems almost musically deceitful. A steady guitar drone, organ, and drums propel the song through rhythmically mesmerizing lines about a stereo that "sings to itself or whatever it does/when it sings to itself of its long lost loves".

But singer Matt Berninger's lyrics paint an astoundingly compelling portrait of contented apathy in young adulthood. Before the house, the kids, and maturity fully arrive, when all that matters are the distractions of TV and stereo and trying to stay warm through a long winter...there must be a million apartment stories like this one.
