I've been listening to a ton of new music lately. First I have a friend who's expanding my musical horizons into some new genres, as well as pointing out artists in indie rock I have egregiously overlooked, such as Wilco. Now I know that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is amazing. Then there's been my usual search through the blogs for something new and exciting, and my biggest discovery on that front has been Menomena.Just listen to Wet And Rusting. That should be all it takes to convince you how awesome this band is. The addictive piano line, the vocals creeping in and out, the drums providing a great beat. Lyrics like "It's hard to take risks...with a pessimist." It all comes together into an incredible song. The rest of their album Friend And Foe does not disappoint. There's plenty more piano, as well as some interesting use of the saxophone. There seems to be a pretty wide range of vocals. I could believe that it's all one guy, but I wouldn't be surprised if several members were contributing. I notice some similarities to TV On The Radio. The music can seem minimal at times, not overwhelming you with sound but being very precise about it, to great effect. I will of course have to see how well the music holds up for me over time, but right now I think they're phenomenal, and I will be eagerly devouring every song by them I can get my hands on.
