Young Savage

I know you think Ultravox were a cheesy 80's band (and they mostly were) but get hold of Young Savage. From when John Foxx was the vocalist - a brilliant piece of new wave/punkIt's like the Sex Pistols produced by Brian Eno.

  1. ArielX says I just might be missing that gene responsible for discerning the cheesy from the non-cheesy, cuz I LOVE Ultravox; Lament was one of my most-often-played albums when it came out. Few groups did New Romantic as well, as craftily as Monsieur Ure (heh heh) and Co. Plus they had that Thin Lizzy connection (to go back even further, and date myself even more) which gave them something of an edge. I've been looking for that album lately, and I do believe it's out of print which surprises me, cuz it's so damned good. And of course the States hardly even acknowleged them then, but everywhere else they were blowing up. TYPICAL. For those who don't know, frontman Midge Ure was one half of the songwriting team (the other half being Boomtown Rats' own Bob Geldof) responsible for the Feed the World song/campaign back in the eighties. Yeah, that's right, a sharp dresser with a heart of gold. Midge proved that yes Margaret, it CAN be done: you can save the world and look good while doing it.

  2. dragonhead says Yeah, alright, I admit it, I love Ultravox. Lament was a good album. So was Quartet. And Vienna. But I still prefer the John Foxx era. They just had that "edge". And no, I don't mean the behatted git out of U2.

  3. RobP says Actually, I've never heard Ultravox without John Foxx, didn't know there was such a beast. Really liked the first album, good songs on the 2nd but I heard some live versions on the radio where they played em better. Faves: My Sex, The Wild The Beautiful and The Damned.

  4. ArielX says I didn't know there was an Ultravox without Midge either. Interesting.

  5. dragonhead says Well, then I've taught you both something new! Hooray for me! Though I find it hard to believe there's someone who'd never heard "Vienna"!
