Jeremy Enigk RAWKS!

Posted over 5 years ago
The first time I ever heard a Sunny Day Real Estate song it forever changed the way I listened to music. In fact, they are probably a big contributor to the fact that I'm a musician today. When I first popped in Diary and heard Seven, I knew I had found something special. I followed the band closely until they split and then re-formed, and then split again. I've long hoped they may give it another shot, but in the meantime, the groups frontman, Jeremy Enigk, is still making great and incredibly relevant music.I saw Jeremy for the first time earlier this month and I have to say, I was blown away. To start, it was at my favorite venue in the world (The Varsity Theatre in Minneapolis, check it out if you are ever able). The crowd was small, even by Varsity standards. There couldn't have been more than 75 people there. The intimacy was amazing, although, I couldn't help but wish that we could have packed the place for Jeremy. When he came out the crowd was all a good distance back from the stage (most of them enjoying the comfortable couches, chairs, and yes... beds at the Varsity). After the second song, the guitarist pleaded for everyone to move in on the stage. We happily obliged and from that point on, it was one of the best shows I've been to.Jeremy's voice is almost surreal. When you hear it on an album you think, "wow, this guy has a really unique voice." When you actually see him reproduce that sound live, it's chilling. The emotion he played with was unrivaled, hitting both ends of the spectrum. There were times where I wondered if he was questioning his musical relevance, having fallen into obscurity since Sunny Day separated. Or perhaps he was just painfully longing for those days. At any rate the emotion was very real and very well-tapped.The show ended with me getting the setlist and meeting the bass player and keyboardist. Amazing time, amazing show, amazing artist. For those who liked Sunny Day and haven't checked out Jeremy's solo work yet, I highly recommend it. For those of you who's interest I've peaked, let me recommend you pick up his latest album "World Waits" and then move backwards to "Return of the Frog Queen."Cheers, all!

  1. skoif says Hell yea. Doug introduced me to SDRE, and I was instantly hooked--mainly on the album, Rising Tide. The whole album is excellent; my favorite song is 'Rain Song', which I remember putting on repeat in my college's library during finals week one semester. I also got to see Enigk's solo show before the Mates of State show at Bumbershoot in Seattle (where Jeremy lives) and it sounded solid for the setup. Props.
