These guys were the definite highlight of my recent day out at Middlesbrough Music Live, a day of (you guessed it) live music which took place over a number of stages dotted throughout Middlesbrough town center. As the sun started to sink behind the Town Hall, and the hot afternoon turned into a pleasantly cool evening these guys from Iowa took to the Ten Feet Tall stage and demonstrated just how big the divide is between new music over here (where another bunch of Kooks wannabes roles of the production line daily) and new music in North America. Over there the emerging bands seem to strive more and more to find something new and exciting to inject into their music, rather than dusting off the same tired old formula again.
The Envy Corps are definitely no exception here. Following a tour with The Killers they are now visiting towns around the UK alongside The Editors (who have a new album coming out) and would be well worth catching if you have the chance. The four piece, which includes two brothers powering the rhythm section, come from Ames, Iowa where the big skies have obviously influenced them to produce some soaring and melodic music. Recently signed to Vertigo they have a single, Wires and Wool, coming out on the 18th of June which follows the earlier release of their Story Problem EP back in February. Both of these songs demonstrate their ability to craft delicate, building songs out of whispered beginnings that drive forward, gaining momentum and energy until you are jumping around in time to their punchy rhythms. Combining Radiohead ambience and elements of bands like My Morning Jacket and the recent offerings from Modest Mouse it’s brilliantly catchy whilst maintaning something unique and offbeat, particularly with respect to their wistful, unpredictable lyrics. Their songs tend to be of a romantic nature and are often tender and beautiful. This is captured nicely in the song Story Problem where Luke singsYou accused meOf wearing movies in my eyesBut I still love youOf course I love you! With the recent success of albums from the likes of The Arcade Fire and the aforementioned Modest Mouse these guys could easily find themselves rising to the top of the indie ladder. They definitely have the talent and ambition to live up to such expectations.Image taken from the Middlesbrough Music Live WebsiteThe Envy Corps: Story ProblemWebsite | Myspace | Vertigo RecordsOriginally Posted on Oh Inverted World
