So many phone calls and e-mails flooded the city aldermans' offices that the ordinance will not be put up for a vote tomorrow! WhooHoo!! The ordinance is supposed to be rewritten before it comes up for a vote again, most likely next month. The thing that gets me is that it's the big venues that this ordinance should apply to; they are the ones most likely to have people get hurt. The current regulations the city has are sufficient for preventing another E2 tragedy, but they need to be enforced; something's that's always a problem in Payoff City.

I think the article is another example of how people's misuse of statistics and research can distort policy. In my experience working with teenagers, the depression, anxiety, anger, etc, is more likely to be there before the drug use, and the kid seeks out ways to "self-medicate", to cope, whether via alcohol, pills or other illicit substances. Turning the kids into criminals doesn't help. Think about all the Big Pharma commercials that promote drug use as ways to manage your problems. Think of all the psychotropic drugs prescribed to children as young as 6, thus laying the groundwork for a teenager to reason that drugs can solve their problems, then add in the usual adolescent impulsivity and seeking of new experiences, and well, things happen.
