My ancient computer was having issues the last couple of days, so I had to skip making a couple Black History Month music posts. Today's artist is the powerhouse known as Aretha Franklin. This woman is an innovator who fused both spiritual and sexual ecstasy into some of the most sensual and inspiring soul of the '60s and influenced generations of singers.Lady Soul has had more platinum singles than any other woman in recording history and was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. While she has had a turbulent personal life and, like any long-ranging musician, made some ill-advised career moves, she has built a canon of work that has reshaped not only soul, but also gospel and pop. This song comes from her often overlooked album "Soul '69," which, despite it's title, contains some of her jazziest singing and is one of my personal favorites. Whenever I get a little tipsy, I turn into Aretha Franklin. A very substandard one without a doubt since I can't sing to save my life, but her songs make me want to sing and alcohol makes me brave enough to embarrass myself with the attempt. Thankfully for everyone concerned, I don't step over that line to often.
