WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Alone II - The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo - Live Long Beach Hootenanny at Fingerprints

Posted 11 months ago

I'll admit, I never owned music by Weezer. The only songs I knew were Undone and Buddy Holly. This new CD makes it evident that Weezer singer Rivers Cuomo is more than a cookie-cutter front man. On this CD he explores numerous musical angles like a Nirvana-ish sound, a nice version of a Beach Boys song and a little British Music Explosion flavor. I also hear a little Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's, a dash of Sonic Youth and a pinch of 7 Seconds. Cuomo seems to have deep musical roots.

The CD has a nice homey feel to listen to it. Cuomo admits, he "Can't Stop Partying" on track 13 and sings "Screw rehab, I love my addiction. No sleep, no sleep, I'm always on a mission". It seems like he's inviting you into his world and it's a fun place to visit. Try it out. I wrote an article for the LAist about an in-store hootenanny he did this week. My hubby took photos it truly was a hoot, and the CD is a nice reminder. Check it out if you're interested >>>

Okay, for example Track 14 - Paper Face

If you listen to this track closely, you will hear hints of Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and Nirvana.  The vocals are raspy and longing, the guitar strings are jangly, like you need to tighten the strings.

There is a buzz of distortion throughout.  If you didn't know better, you'd be sure that the musicians had their hair hanging in their faces, their jeans hung low on their hips, and the sweater was straight out of the Goodwill.  Sometimes the vocals and guitar are fast and
    he's screaming in the microphone.

    You know, the whole package.
