you invade my soul

okay, so it's true. i'm silly with it. i went to death cab's show at thanksgiving point in lehi, utah, on memorial day. i stood in the cold for two hours by myself, and as i stupidly left my ipod in the car, my california-acclaimated body not only suffered through blustery frozenness, but i had to listen to a bunch of "teens" talk to each other -- it was horrible. but ah, redemption! so sweet. the show finally started, tegan and sara opening (excellent!) and all was well in my heart.i was delighted with the mix DCFC played -- opening with 'the new year' and following with lots of old stuff like 'a movie script ending,' 'why you'd want to live here' and even 'your bruise.' of course, quite a few off the new one, 'narrow stairs': 'bixby canyon bridge,' i will possess your heart,' 'cath' 'no sunlight,'grapevine fires' and 'the ice is getting thinner.' from 'plans' they rocked 'marching bands of manhattan,' 'i will follow you into the dark' and 'crooked teeth.' they played a little something from almost all their albums, in fact. of course, not all the kiddies are as cool as me (sarcasm) and most of them were silent during the old songs and sang at the top of their lungs to tracks from 'transatlanticism' and 'plans.' i'm no elitist, though -- 'plans' is probably my favorite album, seconded by 'the photo album.'
their set was polished as usual, and they jammed songs like 'transatlanticism' and 'i will possess your heart,' which i love like i love in 'we laugh indoors.'
what's ever-admirable about death cab is their normalness, even while being musically as close to perfect as i can imagine. they seem like a bunch of guys real people could easily be friends with, and they treat their fans well. (always a good sign). after they left the stage (there was a LAME 10 pm curfew. ick.) we all started chanting "ONE MORE SONG" and they came back out and played THREE MORE! i felt spoiled, really.
after it ended, i headed over to the merch booth, bought a t-shirt, and had this ridiculous idea to go to their tour bus which was parked behind the fenced lawn area where the stage is. my friend lani is always doing things like that, but she's so much more smooth and confident than i am. but i had this nagging nervousness in my heart, like i was worried about something. so finally i went over there. the roadies were taking down the stage and DCFC was standing by the bus watching. i stood there not knowing AT ALL what to do or say. i could see nick and jason not too far away and chris in the distance. there were only 2 other people there waiting to see them. then all of a sudden, ben walked pretty hurriedly to the bus (i was like 10 feet from the door), one of the fans there said, "hey, ben." and he just kept walking. he seemed to be on the phone, and didn't feel like chatting it up. i just stared at him and started to take out my cell phone to snap a photo (my real camera battery died while shooting the not so great video i'm posting up here.) but then i thought how paparazzi it would be to shoot a photo like he was in a zoo. so i shoved it back in my pocket. he seemed to eye me kind of suspiciously and went right into the bus. i was SO close. and i said nothing. it's like that part in 'sleepless in seattle' (and 'an affair to remember') where she says, "and all i could say was... hello." only i couldn't even say hello. i just looked at him. it was just too surreal. i felt he must have been fake, like it was all a dream. so yeah, i didn't talk to them. but i'm still glad i plucked up the courage to try. maybe next time, favorite band. altogether it rocked super fantastaliciously hard. so it's all good. really, really good.
for my fellow fans, my super-crappy audio on my surprisingly decent quality video probably won't bug you. anyone else, you might be annoyed with it cause i'm kind of short and it's hard not to just film people's stupid heads... hehehe
ben, looking foxynick and jason rockin' out...chris was the hardest to focus my camera on, but i tried!

my apologies. like i said, i'm short. i was on my tip-toes the WHOLE song. it's pretty representative of my experience, though...
