Grooverider Sentenced To 4 Years For Pot Possession In Dubai

Grooverider is a household name in Drum N Bass circles. He's one half of the BBC Radio show "Fabio and Grooverider" and has promoted UK dance music for as long as I can remember (since the 1990's). Unfortunately, his newest claim to fame is not music related. DJ Grooverider, real name Raymond Bingham, was arrested last November for possession of marijuana at the Dubai airport. He has been in prison for the three months since. In January, he admitted to possession of 2.16 grams of pot - an amount that barely gets a slap on the wrist in the UK or US. The minimum sentence for drug possession in Dubai is 4 years in prison and this is the sentence that Bingham received in court this week. In an interview given from his cell, the DJ previously said: “I just want this to end and to never come back. It was a small amount. Back home I would not even get prosecuted.” According to police reports, he was arrested at Dubai International Airport on November 23 after flying into the country to play a set at the city’s Chi at the Lodge nightclub.
