Magazine Editors Play Musical Chairs: Joe Levy Joins Blender, Nick Purdy Returns To Paste Mag

Posted about 1 year ago
Some major industry news for those of you who follow that kind of thing. It was reported earlier this week that XXL Mag's publishers suddenly "relieved" its Editor-In-Chief Elliott Wilson of his post. XXL Mag isn't the only one shuffling some of its top staff this week, Paste Mag and Blender are doin it as well. Paste Magazine, the independent music mag that recently imitated Radiohead's "Pay What You Want" marketing tactic by letting new subscribes choose what a subscription to the mag is worth, welcomes back its co-founder Nick Purdy. Purdy left in 2006 to work on a sister publication, but has returned, explaining, "What with all the exciting things going on, we need all the hands on deck we can get." Adweek reported that Paste is gearing up for increases in circulation, medium and ad streams. According to Adweek:
Paste also has been conducting tests with Starbucks to distribute the magazine in its coffee shops, readying a digital version of the magazine that's set to launch in the first quarter, and working to expand its non-print revenue.
More on that at Adweek.comJoe LevyBlender Magazine meanwhile, has gained a high-profile new editor-in-chief. Craig Marks is out and Joe Levy takes his place as of February 1st. Joe Levy is currently the executive editor of Rolling Stone Magazine and has been with RS for 10 years now. The NY Post reports that Levy was offered the position by Kent Brownridge. Blender Mag is one of the titles that Brownridge purchased last year as part of the Alpha Media Group. According to the NY Post report:
Brownridge said he plans to boost Blender's rate base to 1 million in early 2009, putting the rate-base within striking distance of Rolling Stone's 1.4 million.
Jann Wenner, Levy's former boss at Wenner Media, responded to Levy's leaving with, "Joe was a good friend and a terrific editor. We will miss him, and think he will do a great job at Blender. Making another music magazine great will help everyone."Read the full story on the NY Post. You can also read a great interview with Joe Levy about what it's like to work in the music biz on RollingStone.com
