Dizzee, Winehouse, Joss, Marley All Nominated For MOBOs

Posted over 2 years ago
Dizzee Rascal and Amy Winehouse both scored four nominations each for UK's Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. Dizzee was nominated for best UK male, best song for "Sirens," best video for "Sirens" and best hip hop act. I hope he wins best video because I LOVE that "Sirens" video. In fact, I'll include it here for you to watch again:Sirens

However, he doesn't get my vote for best UK male because he will be competing with Kano, Lethal B, Sway and Wiley. Anyone that has kept up with my posts already knows that my heart belongs to the godfather of grime, Wiley. I don't think it's right to pit the teacher against the student, but I'm hoping that Wiley blasts all the competition to prove that nobody can eski better than the Eski-Boy...Kano is also in the running for best hip hop act along with Common, Kanye, and 50 Cent.Amy Winehouse has been nominate for best UK female, best song for "Rehab," best video for "Back to Black" and best R&B act. She will be competing with Beverly Knight, Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae and Jamelia for the best UK female award. You might have noticed that Winehouse and Dizzee will be competing for best song, for the second time. "Rehab" was pitted against "Sirens" for the Mercury Music Prize this year as well.I am also excited that Shaggy is both hosting the event (alongside Jamelia) and competing for best reggae artist! I wish him the best of luck, he truly deserves it. It will be a tight contest though - he's up against the legendary soundsystem deejay: Tony Matterhorn, the truest of reggae stars from the studio to the stage: Stephen Marley, the chart-topping teen sensation Sean Kingston, and new-comer who features on Shaggy's upcoming album: Collie Buddz. Well, Tony Matterhorn totally deserves it as well, and no one could question Stephen Marley as a reggae A-lister (it's his brother Damien who has severely strayed from the flock), but I still hope Shaggy wins. He deserves the boost in his career, where the others are firmly seated at the top already.Shaggy featuring Ninjaman - "Church Heathen" from his upcoming album Intoxication:Everyone can vote online, so if you feel inclined to participate visit the MOBO website. If you feel inclined to read an article from an excited music journalist the day after, head over and vote for my choices. :) I will be tuned in with the rest of the globe when it airs on BBC 3 TV on 19th September or BBC 1 radio two days later. BBC3 TV is supposed to be available in the UK only, but I'm hoping their is a way around that for situations like these. Hit me up if you know how, otherwise I'll have to find a recording on youTube the next day...)For more info, plus quotes from some of the nominated artists, check out the BBC article.

  1. mktackabery says Music of Black Origin? This is an award? You know, awards are totally meaningless anymore. Love the tunes, but what b.s.

  2. dj ivi says I take it you're not from the UK. The MOBO and the Mercury Prize are a big deal over there. Many bands are excited to win these awards. I agree that some of the American music awards are bs, because they are likely rigged by the record companies and such. But MOBO counts votes from the fans, and Mercury is crazy prestigious, definitely a big deal to the artists who are nominated.

  3. mktackabery says No not from the UK, and I didn't mean to diss the awards, I am just suffering from award show fatigue. At this point to me it doesn't matter whether the awards are truly voted on by the fans or rigged, I'm just sick of them all,and I just think they don't have any meaning because there are so many that you can't distinguish what is truly an honor and what is not. So when you tell me of the MOBOS, I wonder what difference does it truly make? I mean, if you are a fan, you are a fan and who gives a load if the band gets some shiny object for their house? Does it make a difference in your listening pleasure? No. If you are a musician and you slave your whole life and someone gives you a shiny object, does that validate all your hard work? Of course not. Award shows are about record companies pushing products (live and advertised) ivi, one way or another, and I just don't buy them anymore.
