  4. Jonh Ingham says Bernstein was such a cool cat - actually trying to educate people as well as entertain them. and a national TV network gave him the time too. (I well remember him dissecting the intro to Beethoven's 9th on the telly. "Four notes....") If only the pricks who run media today had such class. Great analysis of the blues - hard boiled!

  5. Spike says Bernstein did a good job making a complex subject much clearer. His example of a blues performed "square" without syncopation reminded me of the earliest blues recording I've ever come across: “Nigger Blues” (1916) sung by George O’Connor (white) and composed by Leroy “Lasses” White (black), reissued on the 1978 LP “Let’s Get Loose: Folk and Popular Blues Styles from the Beginnings to the Early 1940s” on the New World Records label. My 10/25/06 post also featured it. ~3GzeRmep26C.mp3~

  7. Bartleby says Lenny was the epitome of Nietzsche's "Gay Science" It's so great to have his series on jazz re-issued on CD and other digital media. Listen to the man's voice - some say he was an eternal adolescent. I say he was an eternal altruist. Brilliant post. Thanks Dimitra.
