Classic Rocker Men = McCain; Alt Rocker Chicks Dig Dems. A vast oversimplification, the media fails again.

"New polling data suggest that men who are into classic rock (Led Zep, Pink Floyd, or any band created before 1975) are likely McCain supporters. Alt rockers and women are leaning Democrat.":http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080403/pl_nm/usa_politics_rockers_dcAs always, polls fail and the media oversimplifies. I guess I better remove my freshly imported copy of the soundtrack to Dazed and Confused. Either that or the Obama sticker from my car. And no one has apparently checked out our resident right winger's "Songs You Should Be Listening To":http://mog.com/deadmandeadman.DMDM, you better get that Brighteyes and Golden Smog stuff off there. Though at least Mike Dukakis is not around to play a Neil Diamond song as his theme song. What was John Kerry's? No Surrender? It shoulda been "Windsurfing Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey"

  1. Groon says Windsurfing Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey OMG I'm going to have to use that as a name for a song one day. That's funny as hell. So I guess my prog listening makes me a shoe in for Ron Paul, then?

  2. dermahrk says Hey, you know that there are at least ??two?? resident right-wingers here, right? I just tend to keep my head below the line of fire more than Jeff does. Of course, I love that song title.

  5. dharmachris says Groon: you would have to ask I_am for the Libertarian endorsed tunage. What song did he pick for his Congressional bid? Mark: yep, your conservatism does fly under the radar; though I tend to wear my liberalism on my sleeve....Who would Hank Williams like?

  6. deadmandeadman says I am not, strictly speaking, a conservative, by the 21st century definition. I have no use for "the moral majority", though I often find myself aligned with a lot of their views. But my music knows no ideology. Hell, I still play Joan Baez & Peter Paul & Mary around the crypt sometimes. Bright Eyes, alot. But when I need that good ole guilt trip the liberals are convinced we should all be on, I turn to Buffy Ste Marie, **??not??** 50 cent.

  7. ivylander says I guess my take on this is a little different. It doesn't tell me that the media is full of shit. It tells me that polls are full of shit. It also reminds me that in Michigan, Hilary Clinton's folks were apparently referring dismissively to Obama's supporters as "Prius drivers." (Another cretinous attempt to conflate consumerism with political preferences.) But this, in turn, reminds me of an especially trivial piece of trivia from the 1972 presidential vote: Nixon thrashed McGovern among every demographic group you could imagine, save one: Saab owners.

  9. dharmachris says Saab owners?? I did not know that. Not only is your record collection eclectic, the random bits of (trivial?) information knows no limits either. And DMDM, I was reading an article in the Atlantic last night about how the current conservative movement sees McCain, and they were describing Clinton and Obama as a Edmund Burke conservatives (govt does have a place, incrementalism), and how McCain's speech to a conservative group was booed, even though he quoted Burke. It's not posted online yet or I would post the link to the article. I found myself agreeing with Mr. Burke. Perhaps your thoughts have worn off on me. I never wanted a Saab anyway. "Conflate consumerism with political preference" excellent summary of the zeitgeist. Witness it on any given day at Whole Foods.

  11. dharmachris says loose morals, schmorals. PS Bill, yes, I stand corrected; the polls are lacking...

  12. ivylander says No, you're right, Chris. The media is full of shit (I say this as a former participant and current lurker). Just not for this reason, or in this instance....
