    Hanal Weech
In all the preparation of our baby's room, we lost track of a CD purchased some time ago, but have found it! The tune is Hanal Weech, sung in Mayan and Spanish (I think.) The lyrics tell the story of a man who thinks his girlfriend smells like an armadillo, done to a cumbia rhythm. "lyrics: You, beautiful womaneven though you are very attractivethe day will come, when I will leave youbecause you smell like the armadilloYou know why I always remember youyou know why I can't forget you":http://www.lyricsmania.com/lyrics/lila_downs_lyrics_28753/other_lyrics_59260/hanal_weech_lyrics_598211.htmlLila is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman and Anglo father, and has lived in Oaxaca. The Mexican cumbio rhythym is common, and apparently originated in Colombia.

  6. Spike says Lila Downs sounds and looks great here. This post and a CD of hers somebody once lent me suggest to me that she is a remarkable talent, and astute. Which region does cumbia come from? When are music videos ever going to abandon short random attention spans?
