Music Geek, Gamer Geek..... Gary Gygax passes away

Posted about 1 year ago
"Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons and Dragons, has passed away.":http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080304/ap_en_ot/obit_gygaxI am betting there is a sizable number of music geeks here on Mog (Dale!) who also have rolled their share of 20-sided dice. And at least in my case, the geek did get the girl.

  1. Dr Locrian says I was very saddened to hear the news. D & D was a huge influence in my life, not only because I'm a lifelong player of tabletop RPG's, but because when I discovered 1st edition D & D way back in the early 80's, it opened doors to subjects and activities that I'd never seriously considered before.

  2. I am says In about a month I will be going to NYC Comic Con, no doubt his visage will be everywhere and his passing will be the talk of the Con. I will reread Monster Manual again in his honor.

  4. dharmachris says Yeah, all those hours rolling dice and being geeky. I still remember the first time I played a serious game, the sense of wonder, like stepping into a Tolkien book for real. I am pretty certain I still have my copies of the Monster Manual and Dungeon Masters Guide from 1981 somewhere around here. "This book (Dungeons & Dreamers) was not solely about D&D, but makes a nice argument about how gamer culture has shaped the internet and current cyberculture.":http://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dreamers-Rise-Computer-Culture/dp/0072228881/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204693518&sr=8-1 Read that and Snow Crash or The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson (well, almost anything by Neal Stephenson really) and you get a sense of what will become.

  5. Groon says I'll have to check that out. I read Cryptonomicon and found that to be an incredibly great read, but haven't picked up anything else by him.

  6. Dale says My ears are burning. Hmmm. I read this, and had to post the link on Multiply. It's a real bummer to me. From a pen & paper game I played with friends as a teemager, to hours spent playing computerized versions, none of those good times would have happened without Gygax. And I know I've mentioned it before, but Neverwinter Nights is my CRPG poison. My wife's as well (she's typing on the NWN message board right now). How's that for the geek getting the girl?

  8. I am says AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! WHO LET THE GIRL IN? I put up a Level 7 "Aloemaru's Mystical Barrier" to keep the females out. Saving throw, saving throw, saving throw. Damn, critical failure.
