Patti Smith gets under the covers with Neil Young and kd lang; wailing ensues and Joni Mitchell shows up and I think she is off key

I never knew Patti Smith did a version of Helpless. In this montage, someone has put the music to scenes from the 1987 Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire, one of my favorite movies. Everyone needs a guardian angel from time to time.
For comparison sake, enjoy kd lang's full gorgeous voice and a choir. The accompanying intro notes in her version are just perfect: (and that entire album is nearly perfect too, now that I think of it)
Finally, check out CSN&Y, with Joni Mitchell.... she sounds off to me, but I don't have too many musical skills.

Why is neil young just so much more cooler (eternally) than the rest of csn&y?
that is an excellent question.
Both kd lang and patti smith make this song into something very meditative and elegiac; meanwhile, Neil is almost snarling and trying to rip into some serious rock riffs when he and the boys do it. I think thats part of it. He gets the soft bit but wants to tear it up. I can relate to that.
if I had to pick just one to listen to again ... kd wins hands down. her version literally gave me goosebumps! :)
kd brought tears to this old rocker's eyes. What artistry! Sound quality on the CSNY live track was dubious, but yeah, I think Joni was off pitch. Neal remains cool, but I did see Nash and Crosby at a recent charity gig, and the magic was there. Dunno what Stills is up to these days.
I dig Patti's version, actually...her voice just does it for me :-)
I just have to say that the title of this post alone cracked me up!!
Chris, i had to chime in because i love, love, love Wings of Desire. what poetic fatefulness that an angel be enamored with a trapeze performer, a human who is trying to fly. Bruno Ganz and Solveig Dommartin are great; Peter Falk, Curt Bois and Nick Cave are great bonuses. okay, i know, i've talked too much. ;D
