Into the Wild

Transcendent, beautiful, tragic and joyful. All at once. Like life. When I read the book "Into The Wild, by Jon Krakauer":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_the_Wild, I was prepared to think poorly of the young man who journeyed to Alaska alone, only to die tragically-- you know, what a fool, traveling alone, no map or compass, minimal food, with an attitude of "gonna live off the land and set my soul free." A dangerous naivete. But then he lives there for 100 days or so, before succumbing to starvation because he mis-identifies a plant as edible, when it's not. And now it all reminds me how cautious most people (yeah, me included) are, how we hold ourselves back from experience. Chris McCandless, aka Alexander Supertramp, did not have that caution. And the soundtrack by Eddie Vedder is perfect. The "article in Outside magazine":http://outside.away.com/magazine/0193/9301fdea.html

  1. Mike the Knife says Haven't read the book, but I found the film riveting and heartbreaking and the young man's story frustrating. Dug most of Vedder's songs, too.

  3. mickimicki says Your post led me to start with the audiobook... really good listen so far... makes me think of many people I know or knew, and, what life should be about... I mean to me, not doubt, the boy went too far; but he wasn't wrong or stupid... a bit of a martyr I'd call him. Actually, Jesus and St. John the Baptist come to mind... Well all I'm saying, thanks for the inspiration! The movie & soundtrack, is it recent? I'd never heard of it (which doesn't mean much :P )

  4. dharmachris says yep, the movie just came out here in the States a few weeks ago, same for the soundtrack. The book is excellent, and Krakauer goes into more detail about other 'holy fools' or wanderers like McCandless. The movie is pretty accurate, and the moral of the story is sometimes we realize too late what is the most important thing in life. Enjoy!
