Architecture in Helsinki - Fingers Crossed

This is one of those feel-good albums, but not the faux-feel-good “wind beneath my wings” kind of stuff – this music just feels good and it makes me happy whenever I listen to it. “The owls go” and “Spring 2008” make me crack up if they come on while I’m walking around. It’s a great break from albums that are big and insane, which is what I end up listening to all the time. If there were more albums like this we wouldn’t need Prozac. The album really begins with “Souvenirs.” A simple guitar melody is picked and joined by another as a girls voice sings, “la, lalala, lalala, lalalaaa, la laaaa”…then the xylophone kicks in. If you’re throwing up now, it’d be best to turn off the album. It is saccharine, yes, it is cute and innocent sounding, but man, it is also good! It is very well-crafted, and quite unique in its sound. Most of the songs are very short so they do not overstay their welcome (as if that’s possible, the adorable things), so it is constantly changing up, though the childish, playful air never really goes away. These guys are fascinated by that feel, and they manage to put a lot of variations on it. “Imaginary Ordinary” sounds like an ode to an invisible friend, composed while grounded. “Spring 2008” always makes me smile – a mischievous little instrumental that sounds like the soundtrack to a kitten. It is the precursor, though, to the album’s centerpiece, “The Owls Go.” This song is absurdly kinetic and unpredictable, yet you will learn it by heart before long. Horns, bubbles, claps, little children, nothing is off limits, and the whole thing is so incredibly pleasing and happy that you can’t help but go along with it. As they sing about “the attic and the basement,” “Asgard,” and “badababa,” you’ll find yourself singing along even though you don’t know the words. It ends with a beautiful little lullaby (with kazoo), as if you’ve just lived a whole day as a grasshopper on a string and now that your child captor has untied you, you just tucker out and go to sleep in his pocket."Full review and mp3 heeeeeere!":http://robosexual.typepad.com/glob/2005/03/architecture_in.html

  1. exnicios says So I've had trouble getting into Fingers Crossed. I enjoyed the hell out of In Case We Die, and I picked up Fingers Crossed...and then nothing. Sounds like you would recommend this as an album worth revisiting? Also caught AIH live about...6 or 8 months ago I suppose. Not a bad show, though I would say that because of the chaos that goes with a live performance, it was one of those shows where you kept waiting for your favorite little twirp or trill or boor or beep on some song, and more often than not you got a stripped down version of the song. Still a good, fun, show, no two ways about it...just not life changing or anything, you know?
